Solid hearty tucker, good vibes, chill music, and casual service. Quick ways to describe this new (ish) bar/restaurant on Mt Eden Road perfectly summarise the feel Scarlett Slims & Lucky exudes. Located just up from the Shell Station, and a very short walk down the hill from De Post, SS&L brings something a little new to the Mt Eden dining scene.
Everything follows the story of two characters, Scarlett Slims, and Lucky; menus and décor tell a cartoon narrative of the pair. Chapter 1-5 in the menu runs you through entrees to desserts, in a unique manner. The food is really casual, classic kiwi tucker - burgers, and fish and chips were what we went for. It was cheap too. You’re looking at $20-25 for a beer and a good feed. Pop a seat out the front and you’ll get the sun streaming in through the umbrellas.

The service is casual as hell, no rush, no fuss, nothing special, nothing terrible. Our waitress was nice enough, but when all you’re getting is a quick feed and a beer there’s not much to it anyway. The food was f*cking great. Burger was a classic beef brisket, cooked nicely and seasoned with the classics. My mates’ fish and chips were done with nice chipotle mayo and both were presented quite nicely for what is essentially a small bistro bar. Of course they dish up nicer fish and chicken dishes to cater to taste - gastronomic bar food and platters, but I suggest going for their shotgun menu over lunch (before 3pm).
Keep an eye out on Mt Eden road for the big neon red signage out front of SS&L to catch what’s up. It’s usually pretty buzzing, there’s good crowd banter and good food to go along with the good drink you’re washing both down with. Open your mind to one of the weirder restaurant concepts I’ve stumbled across in my time.
