The internet; it’s omnipresent, it’s invasive, it’s widespread. It also provides a goldmine of comedic content. Eli Matthewson’s been digging, and the result is his show, “WOW! YOU WON'T BELIEVE THIS DISNEY PRINCE REIMAGINED AS AN ABSOLUTE COMEDY LEGEND!”
A Buzzfeed-esque opening sequence sets the stage for the show, which runs as a series of sketches that parody the pure strangeness of the 21st century internet. Matthewson covers an impressive breadth of topics, slipping in and out of cleverly rendered characters; there’s a TED talk, a narration (of sorts) of a Facebook flat chat, and an excellent parody of viral podcast Serial. Some references may be a bit specific to appeal to all audiences, but the wide exploration of the internet’s many facets ensures even the most passive of internet users are guaranteed a laugh.
Audience participation proves Matthewson’s talent as an improviser; he’s able to work with (or around) what his volunteers offer him, and manages to wring humour out of every interaction. He demands involvement through his audience’s social media profiles, including access to a Facebook account and an attempt at a viral Instagram post. Matthewson is holding up a mirror to our bizarre modern-day habits, but it’s a refreshing U-turn from the usual woe-is-us dialogue involving the internet. It’s charming, clever humour, worth more than just a ‘lol’ reaction on Buzzfeed. Go see it.
