First Impressions : : Champ Canteen

The dream team behind Mt Eden’s iconic RAD café are at it again. This time, Hugh and Duke Tran bringing their effortless style and damn good café fare to Newmarket with eatery, Champ Canteen. It’s bold blue shopfront already turning heads and giving the Nuffield street end of Remuera road a much needed facelift.

Imagine Swiss simplicity meets classic 80’s American diner and you’ve got Champs aesthetic to a tee. The space achieving a clean yet vintage vibe with personalized blue/white enamel dinnerware with white tiled walls and navy booths to match. The mint green staff tee-shirts adding a fresh splash of colour.

Taking after it’s older sibling RAD, the menu has a Vietnamese influence, with a range of breakfast and lunch options. Cheese toasties for the traditionalists, while the more gastronomically adventurous can try dishes such as the poached chicken sandwich with saffron and white wine vinegar, homemade mayonnaise and a cheeky splash of tabasco sauce. Or, take your pick from any sweet treats, starting with the cream-filled, sugar-dusted doughnuts that line the counter

Manning the bright blue Marzocco is Isaac Yu, Champs coffee maestro, caffeinating the good people of Newmarket with style, expertise, and a magnificent man bun. As the winner of the 2016 Atomic Latte Art Throwdown, this man knows his way around a coffee machine. Although be warned, get him talking about their latest single origin brew and his inner salesman will get you drinking the dark stuff before you can say Guatemala.

Let’s be real, these days finding stellar coffee and food in Auckland isn’t as hard as it used to be. Although what will get people coming back to Champ Canteen (sometimes for four days running) is their attention on community and obvious passion for the coffee craft. Hugh and Isaac will make you feel like a regular from day one, converting the Newmarket crowd to their quality brews without breaking a sweat. Three weeks in and there’s already a steady flow of morning patrons, some staying for a morning bite while others linger long enough for a takeaway fix and some hearty banter behind the counter.

Whether it’s coffee, vibes, food or just quality chat you’re after, Champ Canteen has got you covered.
