This week we’re back in business with another edition of ‘Five Reasons’. This time I’m going to be introducing you to model/illustrator/designer/photographer Natasha Lillipore, and as per usual I’ll be giving you the main five reasons I have a crush on her.
5) SHE EMBODIES EVOLUTION
I first encountered Natasha Lillipore on Tumblr, back in probably 2008/2009, where she went under the handle ‘pussymoneyw33d’ on the blogging site. She was a baby goth who only wore black clothes and black make-up – no colour crept into her wardrobe. As someone who lives an almost strictly monochrome life, I loved this Natasha but I also love the way her style has evolved so severely. She went from refusing to wear colour to having bright turquoise hair and modelling for labels like Dolls Kill and Lime Crime. I haven’t been able to locate any photos of circa-2008 Natasha due to a bunch of dead blog links, but here’s her latest evolution: from electric blue hair back to black.

4) SHE’S PROUD OF HER CULTURE
I’ve seen a lot of random people online giving Natasha shit for “looking like a white girl” but acting like a chola. She’s a proud Latina, which definitely comes through in her styling and photographs, and I admire her for incorporating the link to her heritage. With ‘s’-curls, bamboo earrings, heavy eyeliner and a variety of prints, Natasha represents different aspects of her culture. As someone who’s mixed race, it’s always kind of fucked up when people try to call you out for representing certain things when they have no knowledge of your background. I’ve seen Natasha deal with a lot of this, and the fact that she manages to continually shrug it off and pretty much say “fuck you” to her haters really speaks to me.

3) HER ART IS A CONTINUATION OF HER PERSONALITY
Natasha has a knack for having a very steady personal aesthetic. This emerges in the way she styles herself, the way she photographs others and the way she makes art. All of these components are linked together through her artistic eye, and I think it’s cool to see drawings and be able to attribute them to her based on style before even seeing who the artist is. Her art has a lot of mini alien pin-up doll-looking girls, with big hair and intense make-up – almost like spaced-out caricatures of herself. If you guys like her drawing style, she has some free phone/desktop backgrounds available here on her website.

2) SHE’S TURNED HER STYLE INTO A BUSINESS
Natasha launched her website, Her Tiny Teeth in 2012, bringing her younger sister Mariah on board as a designer in 2013. They sell jewellery, phone accessories and sunglasses they’ve designed as well as vintage clothing they’ve handpicked. In her designs and the clothing she’s selected to sell, it’s easy again to see her style is expressed in all her ventures. She makes things that she likes, and that she can wear, but she wants to share her style with everyone as well. Her Tiny Teeth is awesome if you’re looking for something cute that you’re probably not going to find in any stores and if you’re lucky, even something one-of-a-kind.

1) SHE’S NOT JUST A MODEL – BUT RATHER, A ROLE MODEL
I hate the term ‘role model’, I know it’s super cheesy, but in Natasha’s case I’ll make an exception. She’s undeniably beautiful, this is easy to see in her modelling pictures, but I find her uplifting (which is a rare thing for me to say about a person). She’s not exactly the conventional ideal of beauty, a tattooed Latina with huge hair and a quirky sense of style, but she’s someone who’s done what the fuck she wants with her life. It isn’t a traditional idea for most people to choose to live creatively, making art and trying to forge a living from it. I know I, for one, would be way too fucking scared. Go to university, secure a safe job, buy a house etc etc. That’s the way most of us get told to navigate our way through life. Natasha lives in LA and draws, designs and models for a living – a risky choice, but one that I think inspires other people to look at her success and do what the fuck they want with their lives.
In case you couldn’t tell already, I’m kind of in love with her. If you want to fall head over heels but need some more ammunition, check out the following links:
Jayden wrote this while being sad that her hair will never be that big, and she will therefore never be as close to God. *praying hands emoji*
