Classics are cemented when they become the go-to of significant folks. True story. Every great cocktail has been requested by someone in a position of importance. The Manhattan, the Old Fashioned, the Margherita (maybe) – and, in this case, it was the great Sean Connery as the OG Bond, who ordered his Martini shaken, not stirred.
If you care to listen closely, however, he orders a specific recipe, preferring Kina Lillet to Vermouth for its zest, and (of course) adding a drop of vodka.
So, to ensure you get this right, order based on parts, request stirred, and chilled – definitely chilled. As your cocktail is poured, there should be a slight icy fog through the mix as it dollops into the goblet. Garnishing with a lemon rind only adds to the zest, and cuts through the vodka.
For this, we use NZ’s own Rogue Society Gin, and Blue Duck Vodka – both born and bred in NZ, and slowly becoming staples in any cocktail cupboard worth its weight.
- 60ml Rogue Society Gin
- 20ml Blue Duck Vodka
- 10ml Kina Lillet
- Chill coupe with ice
- Add all ingredients to a cocktail shaker, and shake hard
- Shake harder
- Double strain into pre-chilled coupe
- Garnish with lemon rind
- Get your pinky ready
