New Zealand Fashion Week is like that hot girl in your class, she’s exclusive and intimidating yet everybody knows about her and wants to be her friend. Fashion Weekend is like Fashion Week’s younger sister, she’s more approachable, has a great personality and is friends with everyone.
Fashion Weekend provides the goods to the fashion lovers that either don’t have the time to go along to Fashion Week during the week, or want a last minute piece of the action. It allows everyone to feel as though they can get amongst New Zealand’s finest selection of designers and brands. It’s a fuse of highlights from the week so everyone can get a little bit of everything squeezed into two days, with a ‘wrap up’ party on the Friday night, sending off the week that was and kicking you into the Fashion Weekend.
The involved designers also put on smaller, more intimate and accessible shows during Fashion Weekend, so that more people can get a glimpse of what their main show during the week held, at a fraction of the price for tickets. Big names that appeared for the weekend go by the likes of RUBY, Helen Cherry and Workshop, COOP boutique, Zambesi and more. RUBY was the standout show for me, with each model striking a unique pose at the end of the runway, making the show a little more thrilling.
About four to five designer selections are lotted into one show so that everyone gets a little taste of a wide range of designers. Goodie bags are flowing with tasteful treats and you can even get your hair, makeup and nails done by beauty professionals at the event centre.
Whilst mingling in the event centre, you can come across people of all ages, from teenage girls to families and some lowkey socialites thrown in the mix. People come from afar to get in the thick of the famous designer garage sale that always goes off as a hit. This year also offered a lot more material from smaller, local suppliers and designers like Ellis and Friends and Rebes Runway.
The atmosphere at Fashion Weekend is electric, with excitement and anticipation in the air mixed with a cheeky Sunday arvo Rosé and constant bangers played by the local DJ. I couldn’t think of a better way to spend your weekend.
