STATE OF THE UNION: The Week That Was

THAT’S HOT

BURYING THE SKINNY JEAN

I still remember when flare jeans were a must-have, and people probably would have laughed at you for having the smallest flare. I care so much about boot-cut jeans that I know I’ve written about them in one of my previous pieces. Apparently, the fashion industry has decided it’s time to take skinny jeans out the back and put them out of their misery. Allegedly replacing skinny jeans as the casual pant of choice are “fancy sweatpants”. Women are supposedly finally ready for comfort, so stores from the Gap to Bloomingdale’s are ready to cater to our collective need for yoga pants. So, I guess all of you who wear Lululemon when you clearly aren’t exercising have just been way ahead of the rest of us when it comes to fashion. Congrats, those pants were a fashion statement I just heavily misinterpreted. Kudos. I’d like to organize a ceremonial burning of everyone’s skinny jeans, for those who can bear to part with them. Together we can get through this.

ATAUI DENG FOUND AFTER BEING MISSING FOR ALMOST TWO WEEKS

Sudanese-born model Ataui Deng was found in an area hospital yesterday after last being seen leaving a Manhattan nightclub on August 6th. Fellow model Ajak Deng and singer Rihanna both posted online asking for information on her whereabouts at the beginning of this week, with a tip from a hospital worker leading to the discovery of her whereabouts. It’s unclear what she was in hospital for, but doctors said her life was not at risk. So it’s still kind of a mystery what went on there, but at least she’s safe.

HONOURING LAUREN BACALL

Model-turned-actress Lauren Bacall passed away at 89 on August 12th, and New York’s Fashion Institute of Technology is going to turn her donated clothing into an exhibition. Exemplifying ‘simple glamour’, the exhibition will revolve around the five designers who “helped define Bacall's subtle seductiveness and sophisticated mix of classic femininity with raw masculine authority in fashion.” Bacall was an inspiration to many designers, including Bill Blass, Perry Ellis, her friend Yves Saint Laurent, Donna Karan and Ralph Lauren. I, for one, would love to be able to see this exhibition and bask in the glory that is Lauren Bacall. I wonder how tight security would be with the clothing…

THAT’S NOT

SALE OF FAIRCHILD FASHION MEDIA

Condé Nast is allegedly selling Fairchild Fashion Media (which includes publications Footwear News and Women’s Wear Daily for $100 million dollars to Penske Media. When Condé Nast purchased Fairchild Fashion Media in 1999, it was for $650 million dollars, highlighting the effect the digital age has had on print publications. This is the second time this month that a Condé Nast asset has been sold. :+( This emoji reflects how I feel about this unfortunate turn of events.

ATTENDING THE VICTORIA’S SECRET FASHION SHOW

This would come under the Paris Hilton-approved section of “that’s hot” if it wasn’t for one tiny colossal thing – the price. I would love to see the VS Angels walk the runway in their strangely themed ensembles, but with a $16600 price tag for us plebes, it looks like most (if not all) of us will remain pantie-less. I am extremely sorry for using the word panties. Panties. But hey, at least it’s open to those of us who aren’t famous but just extremely rich. Right?

And that's my presidential address for this week. Let me know in the comments what you want examined by me for next week. As much of a fan of picking my own rants as I am, it'd be nice to get given some topics by y'all to complain about.

Jayden wrote this article thinking about the time a crossdresser told her she reminded him of Adriana Lima. Never forget.

Available studies assessing the effects of Garcinia cambogia on weight reduction in people
have shown varying results, with the bulk neglecting to generate significant weight loss/fat mass decrease beyond
that found in the studies’ respective placebo groups.
